VANESSA BEECROFT

Vanessa Beecroft was born in Genova in 1969 and lives and works in Los Angeles, California. After graduating from the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, she moved to New York towards the end of the 90’s where she continued an exciting artistic career, that began in Italy in 1993. In the last twenty years her work has been exhibited at leading Italian and international art institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, New York (1998), Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Turin (2003); Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2005); National Gallery, London (2006); PAC, Milan (2009); Mercato ittico (Fish market), Naples and the Carrara Biennial (2010), MMK Frankfurt (2010). Beecroft participated at the São Paolo Art Biennial in 2002, at the Venice Biennale, Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte in 1997, 2011 and in 2015.

Vanessa Beecroft ha partecipato alla Biennale di San Paolo nel 2002 e in diverse edizioni della Biennale di Venezia nel 1997, 2001 e recentemente nel Padiglione Italiano del 2015.

Vanessa Beecroft’s performance VB82 took place in the Sala del Refettorio at the Certosa di Padula. Thirteen men, reminiscent of the figure of Jesus, were located at the center of the room. The men, all different in age and race, share similar in features, such as long hair and beards, and a white tunic similar to the one used by the Carthusian monks who previously inhabited the monastery. Throughout the performance, the men alternated their position between standing, lying and sitting solemnly in order to reach a transcendental meditative state. The residents of Padula were then invited to participate in a procession to enter the Certosa, taking part in an engaging and all-encompassing artistic experience.
